Attributes

I am having issues with file attributes. If I copy files from one location to another the attributes change to make the file uneditable and if I try and edit the attributes I can't change them - is there something I need to set somewhere to allow me to transfer files without changing the attributes - In most cases I would like all files to be equivlent to chmod 777'

It sounds like that server is configured to create files with such permissions that you can't do what you need/want to do.
You'd need to contact server administrator and have them address this.
If this is a webserver, generally 777 is pretty insecure. It's best practice to give files the least permissions possible as long as they can properly function.
