New proxy type - SSH Tunnel

With SFTP support now, it would be great if FlashFXP supported connecting to an SFTP server (or even regular FTP server) through an SSH tunnel. This could be treated as a kind of "proxy server," FlashFXP already has support for many kinds of proxy servers implemented with the ability to specify which one you want to use for which site.

This is useful in situations like the following:
There is a FTP/SFTP server you want to access which is sitting on a LAN but is not accessible from the Internet. Another Linux/Unix machine running SSH is on the same LAN, is accessible from the Internet, and you have access to that machine. You use the accessible machine to tunnel into the inaccessible machine. (I do this all the time to access private university servers from outside.)

For an example of what I mean, it may be worth noting WinSCP's implementation...

I may not be one to know any better, but it seems to me that much of the code needed to support this has to be around already if SFTP/SSH support is present.

Thanks for your consideration.

Re: New proxy type - SSH Tunnel

SFTP over SSH, nice...

Aaron is right... please, can we go one step futher and implement this SSH feature as Global option in the options > proxy > new tab? or somewhere in the proxy tab?

as Aaron said, it is possible to use SSH2 as socks5, ppl have used this technique for years... they use putty or other high-end ssh clients to setup the SSH tunnel with dynamic portforwarding and then config flashfxp as socks5 127.0.0.1:

It would be great to have such feature in flashfxp:)

Re: New proxy type - SSH Tunnel

This is an interesting idea, something that we had not considered.

I will put this on my to-do list but I can't say for certain whether or not I can fit it into the 3.8 release.

Re: New proxy type - SSH Tunnel

Thanks for your reply bigstar!

sorry for my english, will try my best...
There is one feature i really would like to see in ffxp regarding SSH Tunnel. maybe it's the best choice for now... Make flashfxp to co-work with PuTTY in the background, this is a very good thing to implement and it will be a lot easier and only a few lines of code for you and this configuration will be compatible with ALL SSH2 servers out there and it will be suitable for every advanced user who use this kind of tunnel proxy within flashfxp

PuTTY is free, very advanced SSH program that use low memory usago, with alot of features and can be fired up in the background... with loaded personal profile (very important). Please, check out pgcEDiT, imgTool Classic, imgBurn, DemonTools and DVDinfopro to see what i mean from my point of view. Those are very awesome standalone DVD Utillity and they have one thing common, they co-work (was it the right word?) with each other.

After some tweaking of the settings/programs (per user)
pgcEdit fire up mkisofs by Jörg Schilling (alternative imgTool Classic (cygwin) in the background to make a iso-image of the dvd files (video_ts), right after it has created the iso image, pgcEdit automatically fire up imgburn in the background to burn the new image or auto-mount the image in DemonTools. This kind of configuration, co-work between the programs is very Good becource you get the Best of the Best. This technique has been used for long time.. within pgcEdit even if the new imgburn can make some steps for you. I guess this could be a great feature to add flashfxp and im sure that many tunnel ppl would like such feature even if you consider to write your own code.

imgburn (old dvdecrypter) makes .ibg files automatically from every burn, and when you fire up DVDinfo pro (can be done within imgburn also) and import the Graph data Files (.ibg) you can see how good/bad the burn, cpu, mem usage was from recent(s) burn with imgburn. This kind of feature wasnt in dvddecrypter, it has been added per request, i belive…

This is only example how several Good DVD Utillitys can work together, and im sure that the PuTTY athor(s) will just enjoy the new flashfxp feature with autoload of PuTTY:) Of course, PuTTY will Not be included in the flashfxp setup, advanced users will search google.

Thanks:)

Example for how i mean with co-work between different programs.
Install the above/below programs and tweak the settings of your choise.
pgcEdit > open dvd (video_ts) > click burn > check the boxes of your choise > DONE!

Imgburn > burn the image > click buttom > show .ibg files in DVDinfopro > DONE!
Imgburn > burn the image > file > display .ibg files using dvdinfopro > show .ibg files in DVDinfopro > DONE!

DVDinfopro > .ibg files > load .ibg files (application-imgburn-graphicdatafiles) > DONE!

Re: New proxy type - SSH Tunnel

I really like the tunnel idea like in winscp. But I would not use putty for it!
I use the tunnel option in winscp a lot to get files in a remote linux network.

Re: New proxy type - SSH Tunnel

SFTP connects via SSH people.

He's talking about this http://www.ftpgetter.com/ftp-ssh-tunnel.php

something which would be bonus would also be a FTP to SFTP BRIDGE which would allow transfers from a ftp to a sftp would be nice, but this isnt what the original poster is talking about either.
