Creating directories on the file system

When I create files on the file system on my own PC (the PC Flash FXP is installed upon) Flash FXP it causes problems in Flash FXP.

Sometimes Flash FXP freezes completely and the only way to sort it is to forcefully close it (using ctr-alt-delete for example). Other times the directory will be created perfectly but then the directory traversal pull down will have problems such as not actually pulling down properly (or immediately closing making it impossible to choose a directory) or the directory list will have missing information or none at all. This can also stop me being able to select a folder in the pane for example take a look at:-

You may also notice that the right pane is connected to an ftp address and the content has dissappeared from view (the folder is in fact full of files)

I have had this problem with previous versions of Flash FXP but usually it displayed an error but the new version does not. I did try submitting this before from within Flash FXP but it never seemed to work.

Re: Creating directories on the file system

Please provide information regarding your configuration (flash version, fw, av, onecare?, other such things) and environment (os, themes, etc).

I must admit that i have also experienced times when the path dropdown list has functioned seemingly erratically. Not to the extent of loosing the information as you report, but at least the instant reclosing of the list when the drop down arror is clicked, and the rare occurances when it doesnt open upon click as it should. I've tried to figure out why in the past, but since after trying (clicking) again (and rarely a third time) it goes back to normal behavior i've had absolutely not luck.

Re: Creating directories on the file system

Quick question.. From the Preferences Dialog > General > Options

Do you have the option "Enter folder after create" checked? Some users experience problems with creating folders on their computer when this option is checked, uncheck it and see if the problem is resolved.

When the program locks up or something goes seriously wrong the custom drawing doesn't occur and this is why the ftp view is effected. This is more or less a side effect caused by the actual problem.

More or less it looks like the entire application is locked up, but it's really hard to tell from that screenshot.

You might check your flashfxp folder for a bugreport.txt file

Older beta versions of FlashFXP had a "not responding" detection routine that would be triggered if something took longer than normal but this type of detection and reporting doesn't help with solving the problem and was removed. This may be what you're referring to but i'm not 100% sure.

As another test you might try making a folder in C:\ i.e. C:\test

Re: Creating directories on the file system

The machine flash FXP is installed is the following (directly copied from system information):-

OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600
OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation
System Name DESKTOP
System Manufacturer Dell Inc.
System Model Dell DXG051
System Type X86-based PC
Processor x86 Family 15 Model 4 Stepping 3 GenuineIntel ~3192 Mhz
Processor x86 Family 15 Model 4 Stepping 3 GenuineIntel ~3192 Mhz
BIOS Version/Date Dell Inc. A11, 27/09/2006
SMBIOS Version 2.3
Windows Directory C:\WINDOWS
System Directory C:\WINDOWS\system32
Boot Device \Device\HarddiskVolume2
Locale United Kingdom
Hardware Abstraction Layer Version = "5.1.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)"
User Name DESKTOP\Peter
Time Zone GMT Standard Time
Total Physical Memory 1,024.00 MB
Available Physical Memory 332.17 MB
Total Virtual Memory 2.00 GB
Available Virtual Memory 1.96 GB
Page File Space 2.40 GB
Page File C:\pagefile.sys

Flash FXP version is 3.5.2. (Build 1213) [3.6 RC2]

Windows is running on a standard theme nothing of the likes has been added. I am using AVG anti Virus (I presume that is what you mean with regards to av)

"Enter folder after create" is not currently checked.

Sometimes the entire program does lock up completely and ctr+alt+delete is the only method to close it other times it freezes for a short time. Ironically I have been trying to replicate the problem but at the moment it is working 100% (typical works when you want it to fail and fails when you don't). There was however a bugreport.txt file which has the following content:-

Re: Creating directories on the file system

It just happened again and I have posted a fresh bug report log below (split over 2 posts as the post was too long). I am not sure if it is related but it happened when I connected to a site within my sites list. I have the option to go to a specific folder on my pc when it connects. I changed to a different location on my pc and created a folder which is when it crashed. I also had Flash FXP windows open (in case it makes a difference) but I do not think this has always been the case when the problem happens.

Re: Creating directories on the file system

The bugreport.txt looks pretty straight forward however I'm don't I see any problems or reason for the crash. The code that's called is called for each item in the listing and each time you change folders. For it to only crash after making a new folder is very strange.

The only logical explanation that I can think of is that perhaps somehow the shell item pointer id is invalid but that shouldn't cause the function to crash, rather the function should return false.

I will continue to run some tests.

One thing I'd like you to try is to check the option "Enter folder after create"

Re: Creating directories on the file system

Just changed the setting and not got it to do it yet. Will generally use it with the option selected and see if it manifests (incidentally just before I changed the setting it happened).

1 thing I noticed the last time I turned my PC off is that the end now dialog box came up for Flash FXP saying an error occurred when I was shutting down windows. Only thing is I had not had Flash FXP open for some time. I am not sure if it is related but I have also had Flash FXP close down causing visual studio 2005 to kick in and say there was a problem and asking if I wish to debug.

Re: Creating directories on the file system

Just to let you know I have had it happen again this time with the enter folder after create option selected in the preferences. This time however it actually occurred when deleting a folder from the file system on my pc (from within flash fxp).

Re: Creating directories on the file system

I've conducted numerous tests and I am unable to determine any specific problem and I can't reproduce these type of crashes no matter how hard I try.

In addition to my own testing we have about 10,000+ people using v3.6 RC2 right now and no one else has reported any similar issues.

These leads me to wonder if maybe the problem is system specific, perhaps an application installed on your computer isn't playing well with FlashFXP.

I compared the modules in your bug report to the ones on my own system and the differences were minor..

These 3 dlls were not found on my computer (I don't have these programs)
C:\Program Files\Beyond Compare 2\BCShellEx.dll
C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\fsshext.8.1.0178.00.dll
C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG7\avgse.dll

These 2 dll's had different versions compared to mine
C:\WINDOWS\system32\SHLWAPI.dll your ver 6.0.2900.3121 my ver 6.0.2900.2995
C:\WINDOWS\system32\shdocvw.dll your ver 6.0.2900.3121 my ver 6.0.2900.2987

I'm not entirely sure why mine are older, I have all windows updates installed.

Re: Creating directories on the file system

Sorry it just occurred to me that I had not posted regarding this matter for some time.

Anyway, not long after the last message I formatted my windows box and reinstalled windows. The matter is nowhere near as bad as it used to be but flash fxp can still hang up on creating folders.

Re: Creating directories on the file system

C:\Program Files\Beyond Compare 2\BCShellEx.dll

Beyond Compare is a file/folder comparison and synchronization tool, i dont see why it would cause any issues (based on what i read about it) but to be sure you could try uninstalling it to confirm either way.

C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\fsshext.8.1.0178.00.dll

This dll is responsible/used for the MSN Share folder in My Complete, as this also manipulated the file system it may also be helpful to try uninstalling this to confirm as well. Or more accurately unregistering it (Start>Run>regsvr32 -u "C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\fsshext.8.1.0178.00.dll"). If you actively use the MSN Share folder you may want to back it up first to be safe, as unregistering this dll is designed to remove the folder and i am not sure how it treats a non-empty folder.
