Incomplete Uploads

I uploaded several large (5 - 20Mb) files to a friend half way across the globe. FlashFXP reported a successful file xfer for all, but all files were short by a few (14 - 44) Kb. Transferring again with "resume all" corrected the situation.

I tried a test upload to this friend the next day and experienced the same problem.

* FlashFXP v[3].[00 RC3], build [1003], [X]registered
* OS [X] WinXP
* Running behind NAT/router [X] Yes & Model [3COM Secure Gateway]
* Running firewall [X] Yes, Name [ZoneAlarm Pro], Ver. [5.0.590.025]
* Running Antivirus [X] Yes, Name [NAV 2003]
* Network [X] CABLE

additional info if related
* FTP server(s) name [Bulletproof], version [2.15]

Were the files uploaded using ssl/tls or normal ftp mode?

Normal ftp, PASV mode.

After closer inspection I realized the ftp server was Bulletproof 2.15. Bulletproof v2.x was very problematic with FlashFXP and there were alot of reports of incomplete uploads. I'm not sure if the author of Bulletproof corrected the problem in v2.x or not. I would recommend that the ftp owner upgrade to the latest version of Bulletproof. The latest is v3.x

I will make this suggestion to him. Thanks.

that is not exactly correct.
bpftpd is still at 2.x version
Gene6ftp server is at version 3.0, but it's a competly different server/total rewrite.

Oh I didn't know that I thought they were the same program now that v3.x was released.

I know that this isn't what you want to hear, but I tried again, this time using UltraFXP, and the uploads were fine. Also my friend tells me that he doesn't plan on changing his ftpd, since I am the only one experiencing problems with it.

Using bpftpd v2.21 and FlashFXP v3.0 RC3 I conducted several tests both on my lan and over the internet. I was unable to reproduce the problem. I was unable to find the older v2.15 to test with.

One possibility is that maybe Zone Alarm is prematurely closing the socket or preventing FlashFXP from setting the proper linger state on the socket and the socket closes immediately. You might try a few tests with Zone Alarm disabled.

I will try again without ZoneAlarm and will get back to you.

Hetfield 06-07-2004 06:44 AM

I see you use Zonealarm 5.0x and that software was very problematic for me with transfers and the internet as a whole. I don't say it should be your problem but version 4.5 of zonealarm seems alot more stable to me.

I was experiencing total lock-ups with ZoneAlarm Pro v5, triggered by IE though, not FlashFXP. On their user forum, users are recommending downgrading back to v4.5 until the problems are fixed.

So last night I downgraded ZoneAlarm. Will try to re-test my uploading problem tonight or tomorrow.
