The difference is AUTO, see thread title.
I've used FXP for many years, and liked the way it works, when there is no problem, I have alot of other things to do besides clicking 'check for update' buttons on all my tools. So by default, not having experienced problems, I was working with a very old version 'unawares' . . . Now that I have the latest version with auto update I think it's cool to get a notification on startup that a new version is available. Have already updated a few times since I upgraded, and I have confidence I will know when updates occur without having to proactively check for them.
I still think auto update rocks!
