Default FTP Upload Speed

My internet was recently upgraded to be part of the city's fiber. It gives me a guaranteed 10m down, 1m up connection.

I wanted to test out the speed by uploading a large file to my server. When I upload a file with FlashFXP 4.1 (1648), the uplaod speed starts out at 320 but quickly drops down to about 90k/s.

If I use another FTP program, like Cute, I see the speeds holding at about 980k/s.

I read a post about going to options/preferences/connection and setting the buffer size. I've set them to 'auto' and '128', closed FlashFXP, restarted, try again, but nothing changes on the upload speed.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Chris.

Hello Chris,

What connection type are you using to connect to the server? Is it FTP, SFTP over SSH, or FTP SSL/TLS?

I'm not quite sure why your experiencing slow upload speeds but I will do my best to help you resolve this issue.

I'm using normal FTP and it does connect on passive mode. I've always used a default of FlashFXP so all the preferences (other than default starting folder) are still left at default settings.

What version of Windows are you using?

Are you using a firewall? If so which?

I am investigating your issue but thus far I am unable to explain why the file transfer is slower than expected.

I am using Windows 7 x64
I use Eset Security Suite which has a rule to allow full control to FlashFXP; however, when I noticed that FlashFXP was super slow while CuteFTP was super fast, I disabled all security to try the uploads again - still the same speed. Even with firewall/av turned off, still see slow speeds.

My boss said he talked to our rep at the internet provider who told him that their tech did something to our packet sizes, that they changed their system to break up our packets into smaller chunks rather than large chunks. I didn't really understand it and he didn't explain a lot of details to me. He did also say that they increased out speed.

When I tried an upload later on, I noticed that FlashFXP was upping an 80meg file at about 320kbps while Cute was pushing at about 4Mbps.

I got the same problem. Using last stable version (but tried also previous). Very slow upload speed (to my website via ftp) comparing with other ftp clients. All settings set at default state and i don't have any firewall program installed. I have WinXP SP3 x86.

some servers operate on load balancing which may mean that your upload speed wont max out, that said its is a little vague to just claim that ffxp is slower than all others ftp clients when no logs are provided, settings used, screenshots and provide proper information about exact program versions and if any other activity on your particular WAN connection was at use, even without firewall various programs still access the internet. alos not having a firewall is silly any intrusion into your OS alone is enough to cripple not only ffxp but your entire OS.

Also many improvements have been made since 4.0 to 4.1 stable and current maintenance releases posts stable 4.1 release contain bug fixes.

FlashFXP is constantly fixing issues at a rate of 10 to 1 against competition.

After the Stable release of FlashFXP 4.1.0 Build 1648 stable only September 26th 2011 another 5 maintenance and bug fix releases have been out the door now at 4.1.3 build 1658 with more on the pipelines.

yeah get the same problem, on local upload to network internal server with 1 gb link to 1 gb link, using netgear router wndr 3700.

used windows 7 32 bit with FlashFXP 4.1.3 Build 1658, download works fine with full speed but on upload dont get more than 50-100 mbit.

Tested also some other FTP Program and works also fine to upload. Seems like FlashFXP have some troubles also tried to downgrade to older version but same results.

You you are accounting you max speed on upload with the HDD bottlenecks? Since your on a local network, you max speed is only as fast as the HDD/SSD allows, for a true test of how fast your network operates you want to create ramdisks and test like that, but real world is a fact that if your HDD/SSD is not fast enough you just wont get the speeds you are expecting. whatever that is...

on that note what speeds are you expecting and what HDD are you reading data from and writing data to, the specs would tell you exactly what max speeds to expect minus network latency.

btw you video cant download it via firefox or increase video window size so cannot tell what's is going on at all.

also have no details on what buffer size your using on either program...

Tried v3.6 build 1240 - upload speed became normal as it should be! It seems that this bug came from 3.7.x version and to the last FlashFXP 4.1 build 1658 (I tried about 10 different versions from 3.7.7 build 1315 to latest build)...

I wish I could explain it but this is a common issue with not just FlashFXP but with all file transfer clients, depending on the system hardware/configuration and 3rd party software installed some clients perform better than others, there doesn't appear to be any obvious answer.

In a previous post you stated you were using Windows 7 correct? FlashFXP 3.6 runs in compatibility mode on Vista/Win7, when an application runs in compatibility mode the way its treated by the operating system changes, how it changes is a bit of a mystery because Microsoft doesn't let us know everything.

I've seen cases where FlashFXP v3.6 running in compatibility mode on Windows 7 isn't subject to certain rules defined by 3rd party firewalls, its as if the 3rd party firewall software doesn't even know FlashFXP is running. In addition to firewalls I've seen similar behavior from 3rd party traffic shaping applications where they're unable work with FlashFXP 3.6 in compatibility mode.

You can retrieve your v3.6 license key via the customer portal.

Since v3.6 runs in compatibility mode its an invalid comparison to v4.0 which doesn't. I'm 90% certain that if v3.6 didn't run in compatibility mode you would probably see similar results to v4.0, unfortunately I don't think this is something we can even test.

On my system FlashFXP v3.6 is much slower compared to FlashFXP v4.0, about 45% slower for uploads and 30% slower for downloads.

We can provide you with specific versions/builds for testing, just let us know which ones you're interested in.

Then how did u can explain that I have the same bug on Windows XP SP3? I tried use the same connection on another comp in my room with Win7 x86 installed using FlashFXP 4.1 build 1658 and upload speed was 4x faster than on computer with WinXP SP3 using FlashFXP 4.1 build 1658 and about 15-20% slower with v3.6 build 1240!
