How to connect to a web server?

Hello all,

Since this is my first post here I think I shall start with the biggest newb question of all.

How do you connect to a web server if the person only provided you with the following information?:

1)IP address
2)Username
3)Password

In the past, I have always received IP information with a "ftp://" in front of it. I tried entering that before the address like so: ftp://xx.x.xx.xxx but it keeps telling me "[R] 530 User xxxxxx does not exist". Moreover, I don't know the post number to connect on so i just left it at 21. Is there another common port I could try? How would you guys go about this?
