If you want to try a good notepad replacement you should try Crimson Editor (http://www.crimsoneditor.com/). It's freeware, has syntax highlighting for most major programming languages (C/C++/Java/ASP/PHP/Pascal/TCL/Perl/Basic/etc.) and you can open multiple files in one program instance. Haven't tried textpad yet, but it doesn't seem to be for free
