RESOLVED.

Unfortunately, I was never able to ascertain the exact nature of my problem, I think it was a server-side routine that prevented me from connecting to that directory from here. Many thanks to Bigstar, who tested and was able to connect via FlashFXP. The problem was not inherent in the email client, and I am now able to connect with FlashFXP from here as well.
