Hmmm, I see what you mean about character encoding, however this password is a simple, random alphanumeric with 7 lowercase alphabet, three uppercase alphabit and one numeral at the end. And since I am pasting directly into the other clients as a test and succeeding, I have been assuming that if anything strange is happening to the password it is happening in FlashFXP rather than ftpserver . . . "some FTP servers do not allow second chances" - maybe this is what is happening - but if so, wouldn't it affect my attempts with the other ftp clients, or would the server 'mark' which client is attempting to connect?

I am totally abashed at this behavior. Do you see anything in the logs that might offer any other clues?
